How I Stopped Losing French Hook Earrings

When I was little, I remember my mom telling me those tiny rubber pieces on the backs of earrings were just part of the packaging. You know the ones—soft, squishy, and often tossed aside without a second thought. According to her, they were only there to keep earrings from slipping off the card—not something you actually needed to wear.

Mom was right, they are great for packaging but as I got older (and lost more earrings than I care to count), it finally clicked:
If they’re strong enough to keep earrings from falling off the card, wouldn’t they help keep them from falling out of my ears, too?
Yes. Yes, they would, the little clear things had a dual purpose.

That realization changed how I wear earrings—and how I package them, too. These days, I consider silicone backs so essential that I include extras with every order from my shop.

Why Silicone Backs Matter

Hook-style earwires—like French hooks or shepherd hooks—are beautiful, comfortable, and easy to wear. But they come with one little flaw: they don’t always stay put. A scarf, a hug, or brushing your hair behind your ear… and suddenly, your earring is gone.

Silicone backs are a simple, effective way to prevent that. Clear, lightweight, and almost invisible when worn, they slide onto the back of the earwire and hold it snugly in place—so you can move freely without worrying about what's still hanging on.

Why I Use Silicone (and Only Silicone)

There are different types of earring backs out there, but I choose silicone for a reason:
they’re safe for your jewelry.

Unlike rubber, silicone won’t cause metal to tarnish—an important detail when you're wearing antique finishes or copper tones, like many of the pieces I create. Silicone backs are also hypoallergenic, which makes them a gentle choice for sensitive ears.

Now, they’re not perfect—over time, silicone can harden. But I’ll take that minor tradeoff any day if it means keeping your earrings secure and your metals protected.

Why I Always Include Extras

As someone who wears earrings daily and creates them for a living, I know how easily those tiny backs can disappear. One might roll under the dresser. Another might vanish into the lining of your purse. That’s why I don’t just include a pair—I include extras.

Because I want your earrings to be worn and enjoyed, not lost halfway through your day.

A Little Jewelry Tip

Keep a few silicone backs tucked away in your drawer, travel bag, or vanity tray. You’ll be surprised how often they come in handy—especially on busy mornings or when packing for a trip.

And if you ever find yourself needing more, don’t hesitate to ask. I’m always happy to send a few your way.

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference.
And these overlooked little pieces of silicone?
They might just be the everyday guardians of your jewelry box.

The Beige Rebellion: The Return to Beauty and

When I became a mom in 2017, I opened social media to find a culture shift had begun. Countless influencers who were suggesting that "less" was everything. The trends at the time told me to declutter, simplify, and strip my life of anything unnecessary. Nurseries were to be filled with wooden toys, that realistically, no child actually played with. Living rooms were swathed in sterile white and beige, with no pops of color and no personality. The goal was calm, minimalism, order... homes that looked more like hotels than havens of family life.  To be honest, I bought into some of it. It did look nice - clean, polished, serene. But the need to assimilate faded quickly. I believe it was because, a hotel is a nice place to visit but home is where you live. Our home is a picture of our life story, clues to our interests and life stages. Home is a place to make memories, to grow up, raise a family or grow old in. Home doesn't feel like home when it looks like a hotel. I no...

Fireworks and Flashbacks: A Nostalgic 4th of July

🎆 My Top 10 Favorite Nostalgic Things About the 4th of July A little love letter to simpler celebrations, gingham tables, and all the things that make Independence Day feel like home. There are so many things about the 4th of July that bring on a deep and vivid nostalgic euphoria—maybe even more than Christmastime. I think it’s because it comes on more suddenly, and once it’s here, we’re less distracted and there’s less pressure to make everything just perfect. It’s a holiday often spent kicking back and relaxing. But there’s just something about the 4th that feels like a sweet old memory. Maybe it’s the scent of barbecue smoke or the first taste of a bomb pop. Maybe it’s the way even a divided country seems to pause for a moment to stand together. Whatever it is, this day carries with it a kind of old-fashioned magic. And today, I’m celebrating that with my top ten favorite nostalgic things about the Fourth—those little details that feel stitched right into the American m...

The Power of Nostalgia: Why We Long for the Past and Why It Matters

The Power of Nostalgia : Why We Long for the Past and Why It Matters Almost everyone has one, sometimes it's on the shelf in the closet, sometimes it's slid under a bed, up in the attic or in a cedar chest at the foot of a bed. Sometimes it's a shoebox, or maybe a reused cardboard box or plastic bin. But whatever form it takes, almost every home has one. Some people would rather not look inside, others simply choose not to make time but when we open it, we are often overcome by a sensation that sweeps us away.  A keepsake box or memory box is one of the most powerful material possessions we have next to the bible. Even the photo albums on your phone or computer can't compare because they lack the power to awaken as many senses. The touch, the sight, the smell, or the sound can be all it takes to transport us back in time, through a powerful sensation that aches in the most wonderful way. This experience is known as nostalgia.  But what is nostalgia? Is it j...
